Outlast Demo: Can You Survive the Nightmare?

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a good time to build out your collection of spooky games. Outlast, a first-person thriller set in a psychiatric hospital, was a huge hit in 2014, and now developer Red Barrels is working on a sequel. To pique your curiosity, it's offering a free demo on Xbox One, PS4 and Steam. I can't vouch for its scariness, but my colleague Jess Conditt was appropriately terrified, jumping and shrieking at E3 last June. It follows two journalists, Blake and Lynn Langermann, as they investigate a murder deep in the Arizona desert. Scary stuff.

The two made demos weren't publicly released and were only available at gaming conventions, such as Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). Few YouTubers were given a free copy of the demo to demonstrate the game's content to their respective audiences.

The first demo was released at E3 and PAX East. It features Miles at the asylum's courtyard from the start in front of the scaffold. The main story is the same with some differences, omitting notes and documents and minor alterations to the camcorder's display design, as well as starting off with 4 batteries instead of 2. While passing through the first hallway, a mental patient can be found dead at the bathroom near the sink, contradictory to the final version where he locks himself in the bathroom and later runs away after Miles traverses through an air duct. Upon trying to cross the debris at the upper hall of the atrium, Chris Walker will ambush Miles and throw him through a window into the lobby, where Miles will meet Father Martin for the first time before passing out and waking up in one of the basement rooms. After attempting to leave, Walker will burst through the door and chase Miles without attempting to kill him, but will consistently attack the player if he catches up to them. The player will have to evade Walker and escape through an air vent located in the generator room from where Walker came from. After emerging from the vent, the player can finish the game by exiting through a door where Chris will, yet again, ambush Miles before tearing off his head.

The second demo was released at PAX Prime. It starts off right at the beginning of Prison Block. The gameplay begins at block A and goes up to the point where Chris Walker breaks through the airlock. The demo concludes as soon as Miles gets blasted from the balcony onto a pile of dead bodies. Additionally, The Twins' character models were swapped with the ones from a common Variant, due to the limited graphical nudity that was allowed.

You don't have forever to download the demo, however, as it will only be available until November 1. The demo will continue to be playable after November 1. An Xbox One version of the Outlast 2 demo was also announced, but it's not showing up on Xbox.com or through the console itself. A Red Barrels representative told GameSpot the demo will be out for Xbox One soon.

I was able to grab the Outlast 2 demo from Australia, which falls under the European PlayStation umbrella thanks to the legacy of good old PAL, but if you're in the Americas or Asia you may need to wait a while. Or jump through multiple IDs and proxy hoops; whatever floats your boat.

Though brief, this 8GB demo takes us through what is ostensibly the beginning of the game as journalist Blake Langermann crashlands in the Arizona desert and must search for his missing wife, who has no doubt been abducted by a creepy cult.

I played this demo back in April at PAX East and though slow, it contains a cornfield stealth sequence that really makes the most of its advanced lighting effects and physics. There's plenty of scuffling through the stalks, with wayward flashlight beams and menacing growls hunting you down.

This brings you to the end of the Outlast 2 free demo. Overall, the demo is quite brief and can be completed in roughly 10 minutes or so (more if you take your time and investigate the areas around you). What's impressive is the demo's ability to show you several different areas, a few interesting story clues, and new gameplay mechanics that fully immerse you in Outlast 2's first-person field of view.

If you're a PlayStation fan in Europe or Australia, Outlast 2's demo version is free to download right now. The release was announced through a sneaky acrostic found on the Red Barrels Facebook page in the form of a developer diary back in September. Presumably, the demo will be coming to the rest of the world shortly so be sure to keep checking that PlayStation Store for updates.

The demo features cameraman Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with his wife Lynn. The couple are a pair of investigative journalists tasked with following a trail of clues that began with the seemingly impossible murder of a pregnant women known only as Jane Doe. The demo states that the investigation has driven the pair to the Arizona desert, "to a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do."

Horror enthusiasts and gamers alike have been graced, yet again, with an experience perfectly designed to kick this Halloween season off just right. Developer Red Barrels, who dragged us kicking and screaming through the depravity of the Mount Massive Asylum in Outlast, have released a free demo for their upcoming sequel Outlast 2, but only for the month of October. As twisted and nightmarish as its predecessor, the Outlast 2 demo proves that sequels can kick just as hard as original chapters.

Shortly after the release and popularity of Outlast, Red Barrels announced the sequel. A gameplay demo was then released at both PAX East and E3 2016 on April 22 and June 15 respectively, with a release originally slated for Autumn 2016. Due to development delays, the game was ultimately released on April 25, 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch version released on March 27, 2018 on the Nintendo eShop.

Throughout his journey, Blake is repeatedly assaulted by flashes of light and suffers from increasingly disturbing hallucinations of his Catholic elementary school while pursued by a demon. The hallucinations gradually reveal the events surrounding the apparent suicide of Blake and Lynn's childhood friend, Jessica Gray. It is ultimately revealed that Jessica fell down a staircase and broke her neck when being chased by Father Loutermilch, who molested her. It is unclear whether she tripped or was pushed down by Loutermilch. He manipulated Blake into keeping quiet about the incident while making it look like she had hanged herself. The demon chasing Blake is a twisted version of the priest. Blake also finds a document revealing that the Murkoff Corporation is the cause for everyone's insanity due to an experimental mind control station hidden deep in the mountains, which is also responsible for the flashes of light.

On April 23, the game demo was showcased and released at PAX East 2016[19] and E3 2016 on June 15.[6] On August 26, Samuel Laflamme, the original composer for Outlast, officially announced his return to compose the game's soundtrack, as well as the upcoming possibility of another teaser.[20]

Jumping right in, even the demo's opening gamma adjustment screen is scary. I literally jumped when I realized there was a looming figure back in the darkness who clearly did not have my best interests in mind.

It's not entirely clear if what is happening in the demo will be the final story of the base game, but there's a solid mix of established horror tropes with elements that made Outlast such a fun experience.

Right off the bat there was a concerning issue for me, but it's simply an issue of some events not triggering properly in the unfinished state of the demo. Inside one of the shacks I came across what was clearly a dead body, but there was no reaction at all from the main character and no ability to interact with the body.

The demo features an incredibly effective scene when transitioning out of the past and back into the present that is just absurdly disorienting, and thrusts you into a mad dash for your life. The whole scene is handled much better than in the first game as the journalist realizes he's somewhere very dangerous and flight is better than any misguided notions of fight.

Story changes aside, the most impressive thing about this demo was how there's already less railroading in one direction, and a smaller chance of getting annoyed -- while trying to figure out which corridor, crawl space, or tiny gap, the developers want you to take.

From the religious and cosmic horror themes to the greatly improved game mechanics, the demo clearly did its job and has this player at least even more excited for the full game than before.

In the demo that we got to play, Blake encounters a haunting little farm area under a full moon as he searches for his wife, who has seemingly vanished following the crash. Her screams can occasionally be heard off in the distance as you navigate the environment, and while things don't start off particularly cheery, they get progressively creepier as Blake delves further into the farm. 2ff7e9595c
